New MacBook Pro has all the Good Stuff

Hi folks, it’s hard to keep up with Apple’s hardware rush. I just got to break in the new MacBook Pro and now I have to make room for the iPad 2.

The iPad 2 seems to be getting all the attention nowadays, but forthose who want real portable computing power it’s important to know that the three new MacBook Pro’s screen size models bring a huge leap in mobile performance.

You can thank Intel for that with their 2nd Generation Intel Core Processing technology, in all the new MacBook Pros. They outperform last year’s chips between two and four times depending on what you are doing. I have been playing with the top 17-inch model, with a 2.2 GHz Quad Core Intel Core i7 under the hood. It comes with a 750 GB hard drive (SSD drives are optional), 4GB or RAM and Intel’s own new HD Graphics 3000 HD and AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics processor with 1GB of the fastest GDDR5.

What all this means is you are getting a top-tier performance machine you can take anywhere and expect to get a working shift out of it on batteries. Photoshop flies in my benchmark tests, beat last year’s time trial by half. Excel from Microsoft’s Office suite smoked the previous MacBooks running Monte Carlo spreadsheet calculations six times faster. Speaking of spread sheets, the beauty of the 17-inch MacBook Pro is its 1920×1200 resolution. This means you can have lots of stuff going on your screen and still see small details, like small fonts and graphics.

If you are on a budget, you can look at the 13-inch 2.3 GHz new Intel Core chip model which for $1,249 with will outpace last year’s top MacBook Pro. That’s how good the new Intel chips with integrated HD Graphics 3000. Note this integrated chip is not a gaming GPU but rules in playing HD content. All these laptops will easily play back the highest quality video any digital camera can shoot.

Yes, they all have Thunderbolt I/O technology for hooking up peripherals with much faster 10 Gbps transfer rates.

My only small beef with the 17-inch in this series is that Apple (unlike the 13 and 15-inch) can yanked the SD reader out! Their largest laptop! Go figure.

For those wondering where the Windows PCs are with the new Intel Core chips, they are coming in as we speak, after an earlychip recaill from Intel, and they will be cheaper. But for Mac lovers, Apple still delivers.
