An End to My Trip-Devastation in Joplin, MO

We have been chasing storms in the US Plains for the last 10 days and our trip has almost come to an end. We are actually stuck in Denver, CO due to a major flight delay out of Tulsa, OK. Can you guess why? Yes, weather delays. There are still many severe thunderstorms that are moving through the eastern plains and into the Ohio Valley. These storms are very charged and dangerous. There were reports of 8 tornados in Oklahoma alone yesterday. We had to take shelter in our hotel last night as the tornado sirens roared through Tulsa, OK. It was very scary. I will post video of this at some point this week.

May 22, 2011 our targeted area (the area with the most potential for tornados) was Joplin, MO. We decided last minute to change our direction and head into southern Oklahoma because it was a little closer. Am I ever glad we chose to do this. An EF5 mile wide, wedge tornado ripped through this city of 50,000 people destroying everything in a 6 mile path. We were immediately sent on behalf of our national station (Global National) to cover this story. I have never done anything like this before. I was completely horrified with what I saw. Here is a video of what it looks like in Joplin when I wasthere day after the tornado.

Now, I am on my way back home after an experience that I will never forget. I have learned so much about the power of these storms, how to better forecast and warn people of these storms and what it is like to witness everything as you know it be completely destroyed in less than 1 minute. Stay safe out there and my heart goes out to the people who lost everything in Joplin, MO.
